Cancer Personality Traits
Before I reveal which spirit animals represent Cancer, let’s take a quick look at what the personality traits of Cancer are:
- Sensitivity. Cancers are in touch with their emotional side more than most other signs. They express emotions freely, put great importance on family values, and can sometimes let their feelings dictate their decisions.
- Care. Those born under this sign are extremely nurturing. They naturally assume the role of the caregiver. They are also compassionate and can sense other people’s emotions.
- Introverted. Although they enjoy spending time with friends, Cancers are inherently homebodies. They will rather stay inside or spend time with a small group of people than go out to party.
- Ambitious. This sign has big aspirations. They are always dreaming of something new and will often take risks to reach their goal. This ambition can sometimes take a back seat when their need to help others takes over.
What Is Cancer’s Spirit Animal?
Because this is such a complex sign full of emotion, it comes as no surprise that quite a few animals are commonly associated with it. So now that you know a little more about Cancer’s personality traits, let’s jump into its spirit animals.
Of the five animals on this list, the moose is the one least commonly associated with Cancer. Still, they have quite a few things in common. For starters, they are both sensitive to and aware of their surroundings. Moreover, just like the animal, those born under this sign can have unpredictable emotions and reactions to things. Lastly, the moose is one of the least social animals on the planet, and we all know that Cancers have their solitary moments.
If you ask me, rabbits are a much better spirit animal for Cancer. Rabbits are generally quite skittish and shy. Even though they’re social creatures, they appreciate their personal space (pet rabbits, for example, often don’t like being picked up). They are mild-natured animals who care deeply for their families.
Much like rabbits, Cancers tend to be wary of unfamiliar people and surroundings, to the point where they can get overwhelmed in certain situations. They feel strongly about having room to breathe, both literally and figuratively. Generally, just like rabbits, Cancers are mild-natured and loving people who wouldn’t hurt a soul but are also much more resilient and stronger than they look.
Chimpanzees are considered to be among the smartest animals in the world. In general, they are peaceful creatures that stick to themselves, but when they feel that their family is in danger, all hell can break loose. They are excellent caregivers – especially mothers – and they even “adopt” parentless baby chimpanzees.
All of these traits are reflected in Cancer men and women, too. Cancers are very quick-witted and great at thinking on their feet. They are solitary and peaceful, except when it comes to their loved ones. Cancer’s love for their family and friends is the only thing that can help them beat their shyness and skittishness.
I know this might seem like a weird choice for a spirit animal, especially for such a gentle and caring sign as Cancer. But hear me out. Opossums are great at adapting to their surroundings. They are generally solitary but still have a lot of love to give to their closest ones. They are resourceful animals who can cope with pretty much anything.
Does all of this sound familiar? Because it should! Much like opossums, Cancers are very versatile and can adjust to different situations quickly. They prefer a close circle of friends and loved ones and generally don’t mix with the crowd. And lastly, they are quick-witted and very intelligent people.
This might not be common knowledge, but woodpeckers are very nurturing birds, much like Cancers. They nest inside trees, rather than in open nests, which correlates with Cancer’s tendency to see the home as their own corner of the world, where only a select few are welcome.
They are also mainly solitary, but some species are known to live in groups. The species that live in groups will often allow other species of birds to join the flock, reflecting the Cancer’s ability to give love unconditionally and expand their circle of friends for those who deserve it.
Lastly, woodpeckers are very resourceful birds. They don’t have a huge variety of bird calls, so they have come up with their own way of communicating – drumming. They even strategize about where to nest to ensure other species don’t take over their nests. All in all, much like the Cancer signs, woodpeckers are great at thinking on their feet.
